Towards a Merited Trust Model in the EU Criminal Justice Area: Time to reform the European Arrest Warrant?
This Policy Meeting presents the final and most policy-relevant research results of the STREAM Network of Criminal Justice and Rule of Law Experts. It focused on the key issues and challenges characterizing the current application of the European Arrest Warrant Framework Decision (EAW FD) by national judicial authorities and defense lawyers, including the standards progressively developed by the Luxembourg Court.
The Policy Meeting assesses the ways in which fundamental rights violations and rule of law backsliding in some EU Member States affect the scope of the EU principle of mutual recognition and the EAW overall workability. Based on the STREAM Project research findings, the Policy Meeting will allow for an open conversation about the exact ways in which consistency and fundamental rights in the workability of the EAW can be better mainstreamed across the EU, and the extent to which legislative reform is needed.
The Policy Meeting is taking place on 29 June 2023 (14:30 – 16:00, CET) at the premises of the European Parliament. It requires previous registration. The conference will be delivered in English and in Hybrid format.
